Proper Senior Pet Care

We love our pets, and we want them to be around for as long as possible. For those who own senior pets, some considerations need to be made to make sure they have the best life possible. For those in the Pineville, NC area, Friendship Animal Hospital is here to help you take care of your geriatric pet.

What is Senior Pet Care?

The age of your pet is not the only factor considered when determining if your pet is a senior or not. The spices and breed of your pet also make a difference. For example, a 15-year-old tortoise is not considered a geriatric, but a 15-year-old cat is. Geriatric status is proportional to the age of the pet. If a certain breed of dog’s life expectancy is 12 years, eight-year-olds of that breed and older are considered senior.

Caring for Senior Pets

Special care is necessary for those pets that are lucky enough to make it to the golden years. To ensure your geriatric pet’s health does not severely decline, regular visits to the veterinarian’s office are recommended. Our veterinarian might adjust your pet’s diet, including the type of food they eat and how much of it they eat.

Older pets might also need to perform special exercises so they can stay active without getting hurt. You will also need to consider giving your pet nutritional supplements, like joint supplements and vitamins, to make up for what they are not getting through their diet.
